Fiberglass Repairs
The deck on this Port section of a walk around was soft underfoot. The water infiltration was a combination of bad caulking on a rub-rail, loose fasteners in said rub-rail, and water entry around cleats on the gunnel.
A previous owner had drilled holes and injected a miracle product into the soft core to remedy the soft spot
Upon removal of the fiberglass in the immediate area of the holes the core was found to be both rotted and soaked. The prior fix likely made the situation worse.
The core was composed of 6x6 inch squares made of half inch plywood set on a fiberglass bed. The rotted material was completely removed.
All soft and wet deck coring was removed. Note: this repair was done in November so drying the core was just not possible.
The new core was made of half inch marine plywood sealed with an initial coat of polyester resin. Note the cut lines and how the deck fit together like a puzzle. This was done accommodate the slight crown of the underlying fiberglass panning and also to decrease flexing of the deck in straight lines to avoid cracking of gel coat later.
With the coring installed and set in resin as it formerly was, the CSM matting was installed and wet out with polyester resin.
Three layers of Chopped Strand Mat and one cap layer of cloth were installed. The rigidity and weather resistance were of great importance
